Nin s'est produit a paris le 7 juillet 2009 ... pour la dernière fois ? Etait-ce mieux qu'en 2007 ? bien oui, c'est simple, tout le monde a adoré sans exception, ca doit être un signe ? 
Apres une semaine de canicule, un temps californien lundi pour l'arrivé de Trent, enchanté avec Mariqueen, ils vont s'acheter de la lingerie sur paris, mardi des nuages et une courte pluie providentielle va éviter la chaleur immonde de 2005
A 16:30 les preventes nin.com sont disponibles, un ticket personnalisé en couleur qui brille... mais tout petit. Les gens peuvent ensuite faire la queue pour rentrer après ceux qui ont payé 300$ pour Eric, en train d'écouter le soundcheck, par contre, à 18:00 il restait encore énormément de monde dans la file nin.com, toujours aussi remplie, et à 18:00 les portes se sont ouvertes, pour tous, et les nin.com ont été victime de leur lenteur et de l'excès de testostérone des videurs.
Après une première partie miou et ennuyeuse, Trent en très grande forme débarque comme en 1999 avec l'excellente intro de Fragile qui met tout le monde d'accord s'enchaine des tubes de Tds, Broken, et encore Fragile, mais ou sont les 3 derniers albums ? ben y'aura que Thtf et Survivalism ! très surprenant après le matraquage live précèdent du slip. Un concert pour les vieux, avec un Trent en forme exceptionnelle, un robin extra classe, un Justin mou, et un Ilan qui fêtait ce soir là ses ... 21 ans, Trent lui a fait une belle surprise que je vous laisse admirer dans ma video, j'ai pris pas mal de vidéos, malheureusement le son était trop fort. Le zenith était complet, la foule était très réactive, vraiment une expérience mémorable... vivement les arènes de Nimes !

Concert Nine Inch Nails / Le Zénith / 07.07.09

Hier, c’était un grand soir pour les amateurs de musique à Paris. Q-Tip jouait au Bataclan, Amanda Blank (et son mini short) ouvrait pour Santigold à l’Élysée Montmartre et le vétéran Leonard Cohen remplissait Bercy à coup de places à 100 euros. Mais un seul valait vraiment le déplacement : Nine Inch Nails au Zénith. Pourquoi ? Parce que c’était tout simplement l’un des meilleurs concerts de ma vie.

Alors que la terre entière pleurait à la télévision Michael Jackson qui n’a finalement réalisé que trois bons albums en 45 ans de carrière, une autre partie bien plus avertie avait choisi d’assister à l’un de derniers concerts français de NIN. Trent Reznor ayant annoncé il y a peu, la mort du groupe (ou du moins sa mise en suspens pour une longue période), c’est donc forcément un Zénith complet qui accueillait la formation.

Quatre musiciens exceptionnels, un jeu de lumière comme j’en ai rarement vu, un son comme j’en ai jamais entendu au Zénith, une setlist ultra pertinente, je crois tout simplement que le show était quasi parfait. Après avoir tweeté les dernières dates de cette ultime tournée, le geek Reznor entre en scène, accompagné de ses trois acolytes. C’est alors un déluge sonore et visuel qui s’abat sur le public subjugué et à la fois suractif. Trop rarement j’ai vu des spectateurs aussi fans et impliqués dans la musique d’un groupe. Les bras sont en l’air, les gens chantent, pogotent et slamment.

L’enchainement Heresy / March of the pigs, tous deux tirés de The downward spiral, met tout simplement tout le monde à genou alors que le concert vient de débuter. Claque sur claque, on se prend Terrible lie en pleine gueule, on essaye d’esquiver en vain I’m afraid of Americans (interprété originellement avec David Bowie), au moment où l’on croit se relever, Somewhat damaged nous met proche du K.O. tandis que The fragile, Head like a hole et The day the world went away finissent enfin de nous achever. Et pourtant on en redemande, à croire qu’on est devenu complètement masochiste.

Reznor et sa formation se permettent tout, même de prendre se prendre à un moment pour Yann Tiersen et sortir contrebasse, piano et xylophone pour interpréter La mer, véritable perle instrumentale sertie dans un écran de violence. Car un concert de Nine Inch Nails, c’est un déferlement d’agressivité ponctué de moment de pure grâce. Trent Reznor a beau être une brute épaisse, le raffinement de la production de ses albums a toujours montré qu’il savait aller bien plus loin que cette virulence primaire. Nine Inch Nails est une sorte de Depeche Mode sous amphet’.

Et ce son. Ce son d’une densité inouïe qu’on reçoit en pleine face, mais qu’on ne subit pas. Ce son influencé aussi bien par le rock, le métal, la musique électronique ou l’indus. Ce son toujours parfait même sur scène. Ce son est ciselé comme un sculpteur façonnerait son oeuvre conçue à partir d’un matériau brut et affiné au fil de son expérience. Et ces lumières. Même sans les projections du talentueux Rod Sheridan (qui capturera sur scène la séquence anniversaire du batteur de 21 ans entouré de deux strip-teaseuses), cette tournée est parfaite de ce point de vue là. La synchronisation avec chaque détail de la musique fonctionne au beat près et épouse idéalement les chansons. Cela rajoute encore de l’émotion, comme si on n’en avait pas déjà assez pris dans la gueule.

Même les fans de NIN ne s’en remettent pas et admettent que le groupe atteint en ce moment même son apogée artistique. Certains, revenus du concert de Milan il y a quelques jours, trouvaient cette date encore plus réussie. D’autres, ayant assisté à leur septième concert toutes tournées confondues, pensaient hier soir que ce concert était le meilleur qu’ils n’avaient jamais vu du groupe. Je suis tout proche de penser la même chose. Mais de tous les groupes que j’ai pu voir en live en quinze ans de concert.

  • Bordel, c’est rude, le concert s’arrête cash après 1h45 et sans rappel. C’était quand même absolument fabuleux ! #NIN

Voila ce que je retiendrais du 07.07.09. 

J'ai eu la chance de commencer la soirée par le meet & greet : vers 16h30, Cory, un membre du staff nous a cherché pour distribuer les places de presale et faire le listing des donneurs qui étaient présents. Vers 17h/17h15, nous avons pu rentrer par l'entrée des artistes, pour assister au soundcheck, qui était plus un mini-concert pour les fans. 

Imaginez-vous, Nine Inch Nails, une 20aine de fans et le Zénith vide, c'était incroyable. 
Dès notre entrée, ils ont joué The Frail suivit de The Wretched. Tout ça pour une poignée de personne, surréaliste... 
Trent nous a salué, puis a dit que c'était une soirée spéciale : une fan allemande (qui devait bien avoir 45 ans) lui avait demandé à Berlin si elle pouvait chanter Suck avec le groupe. 
Il l'a donc invité à rejoindre la scène. Puis il a demandé : "who wants to play tambo ?". Le temps que mon pote et moi captions ce qu'il venait de dire, un fan hollandais avait déjà levé la main. Ils ont donc interprété Suck, tous ensemble, avec Rob Sheridan qui filmait le tout d'un air amusé. 

Ils ont également joué March of the Pigs il me semble, puis une autre, mais on planait tellement que je ne m'en souviens plus trop. 

On a ensuite attendu sur le côté, avec Cory qui nous expliquait 2/3 trucs, que le groupe se prépare pour le meet & greet. 

Nous avons été conduit à un étage supérieur, on est passé par les loges, là où le staff mangeait, etc. 

Mon pote et moi étions les premiers à aller les saluer. 

Robin s'est présenté, comme s'il était inconnu et venait de débuter dans la musique grinning smiley 
Je lui ai tendu mon vinyl de The Downward Spiral pour l'autographe. 
Ce fût ensuite au tour de Justin : il a parlé français avec mon pote, en disant qu'il l'avait appris à l'école. Il m'a demandé mon prénom et m'a demandé si ça me convenait, la façon dont il venait de signer. Vraiment trop sympa comme mec. grinning smiley 
Ensuite, Trent, qui a du me dire un truc du genre : "Hey, how are you ?". Là, je cherchais bêtement comment dire : "Bien, et toi ?". J'ai dû débiter un truc ressemblant à : "Fine, and you ?". 
Il m'a répondu mais il a pas parlé fort donc j'ai pas vraiment compris, de toute façon j'avais l'impression que j'étais dans un rêveyawning smiley 
Je lui ai juste plus ou moins dit : "Thank you so much". 
Ilan, ensuite, à qui j'ai souhaité un bon show après qu'il ai signé mon vinyl. 

Une fois toutes les personnes passées, nous avons posé pour une photo (prise par un membre du staff). 
J'étais à côté de Trent, le tenant par l'épaule comme deux bons potes. Robin s'est appuyé sur mes épaules. grinning smiley 
Mon pote était juste derrière Trent et à côté de Robin. J'ai hâte de voir la photo. 

On a ensuite pu se diriger vers le stand de merch/bouffe, en attendant l'ouverture des portes pour rejoindre la salle. 



Le concert en lui-même était excellent. Je les ai déjà vu 2x cette année à des festivals, mais ça ne vaut pas une salle. D'ailleurs agréablement surpris par le Zenith, salle assez cool, bon son, température supportable. 

J'étais devant, au milieu, au 3e rang à peu près. J'avais mon sac à dos avec le vinyl, et c'était tendu, je l'ai mis sur mon torse pour le protéger. 
Dans la fosse, c'était la folie, fallait lutter pour pas se faire piétiner. D'ailleurs une fille s'est faite sortir au bout de 30s puis une autre peu après qui a failli s'évanouir. 

J'étais bien content d'entendre I'm Afraid of Americans (bien que ce ne soit pas la 1ère fois), Last (cette chanson déchire tout, avec les guitares métalliques qui trouent le cul, vraiment énorme), Heresy, La Mer, Physical, Head Like a Hole le classique pour finir, etc... 

Le cadeau pour Ilan c'était tout simplement trop marrant, avec les 2 strip-teaseuses topless, et Closer version 50Cent (c'est un mashup NIN vs 50 Cent - Closer in Da Club mix grinning smiley). 
Il avait l'air bien gêné. 

Bref, un jour que je ne risque pas d'oublier de sitôt. 


Un truc m'a gêné : les gros nazes qui gueulent pendant les chansons calmes, ça me donne envie de lacher des pains. Qu'ils gardent ça pour les concerts de death metal scandinave. 
Et le fait que j'ai pas été assez rapide pour aller saluer Rob Sheridan durant le soundcheck... mais bon, on a envie de tout faire, tout voir, tout prendre en photo mais ça passe tellement vite. 


J'ai également filmé (et fais des photos), avec mon Panasonic TZ7 (la vidéo mais également le son sont vraiment de bonne qualité) : 
- 2 chansons lors du soundcheck 
- la chanson d'intro, Somewhat Damaged, mais j'ai vite rangé l'appareil par la suite, je pouvais plus bouger mes bras

it was the third time I attended a NIN show. 
First good point : the temperature, it was not the backroom 
of hell like it was in 2005 in the same venue. 

Mew opened the show. It was not a bad band but it did not fit 
with NIN even if Trent said it was one of his favorite band. 
In 2005, The Dresden Dolls opened and it was a better choice in 
my opinion. 

Then NIN, I thought they would start with home but they did not. 
They already played that song in 2005 and I do not think it is a great 
one to start a show. 

It was a heavy setlist, TDS and Broken oriented. The Becoming was 
powerful. Heresy is a great song but I think it lacks something live. 

The Fragile part was just amazing, at the end of the song Trent said he wrote 
the song during "a dark time of his life". Trent improvised a short intro before 
la mer. 

People you just forgot one thing : it was Ilan's birthday. Trent presented 
each member of the band and when Ilan's turn came he said "last and least (not "not least" ) 
he said he was his birthday. Then a rap remix of closer was played and two topless girls came 
to bring a cake for Ilan. They smashed it on his face. Rob filmed it, he also filmed Physical. 
It was totally crazy and it really reveals how Trent has changed through the years. I don't think 
that such joke would be possible 10 years ago. 

The band: 

-Robin : he was better than North. He is quieter than before but I consider him 
as NIN's best guitar player. He is really a part of NIN along with Trent. 

-Justin : he was quite quiet and seemed a bit tired. 
The fact he can play cello adds a different touch to the band. 

-Ilan : good drummer, more violent than Josh Freese and very loud sometimes 
(wish...). 

-Trent : he seemed very glad to be there. He thanked the crowd several times. 
He was quite talkative and his voice was near perfection.

Amazing. 

I came 2 hours before the show started, i was 5meters away from the stage. 
Mew was okay, the guitarist was really good, however not a fan of the vocals/lyrics. Love how everybody had their hands on their ears during the last song. The crowd during Mew was..dead. I really hoped that for NIN, the crowd wouldn't be the same. I was so excited when i saw the double bass on the stage, i knew that La Mer was going to be played. Finally, after the fog machine had been put on 5 times, Trent Reznor came in. With the fog and the fact that i could see him perfectly, i thought i was dreaming.Somwhat Damaged started, the whole crowd went wild, it was perfect. I was jumping everywhere screaming the words. Some people came out of the crowd because it was so agitated. At the end of the song, i was already full of sweat, ready to have a heart attack, my voice broken because of screaming the lyrics aloud. I really wondered if i would survive for an hour and a half. 
Terrible Lie, Heresy, March of The Pigs we're crazy, the crowd was out of control, everybody screaming the words, beautiful. I'm Afraid of Americans then, and i felt like that iwas the only one that knew the song. All the people around me just stood there, arms crossed, while i was screaming the words. And here was my main problem, where i was was full of "pussies", people who just stood there, didn't move, didn't sing, didn't even cheer, just looked a you while you went nuts. Burn & Gave Up we're just like Terrible Lie & Heresy, except that i was shouting alone, whilst everybody looked at me like this "O.o". Then La Mer, beautiful, but still iwas wishing they would play Into the Void after it. The Fragile came after, and suddenly all the girls woke up. Non Entity was great, Gone Still was a good surprise, and then The Way out Is Through, excellent. Wish & Survivalism got the crowd going once again, however dissapointed that i was the only one screaming "Fist Fuck!" from where i was. Physical was a good surprise. The Day The World went away was perfect, i'm really glad they played it, it's one of my favorites, and it sounds so good live. Hurt came along, got the whole crowd singing along this time (yes, even where i was). And finally The Hands That feeds & Head Like A Hole we're fucking brilliant. The energy from the band and the crowd during those two songs. A guy in front of me who didn't move at all during the whole concert, just suddenly got all excited when it was Head Like A Hole and was jumping everywhere. It finished the show off perfectly. No need to ask for seconds. But weird thing is, i still had enough energy for another hour. 

Sorry about my english, my repetitions, and everything all mixed up in one big paragraph, but i'm still in a state after the show. It's going to be hard to get over it. As many people said, this is my first and probably my last NIN show. But damn, it was worth it. 
To make things short, there was energy and positive feedback from the crowd, Trent Reznor enjoyed the show (Which reassures me after he said "Is it bad that I want to go home already after one show in Europe?"winking smiley, and Ilan's birthday was hilarious. Only regrets? Why didn't i bring my fucking camera with me?

Finally, my report of the 07.07.09 show in Paris (sorry for my approximate English) : 

Best day of my life (or one of the best grinning smiley). 

I will focus on the meet & greet. 


My friend and I had the luckto begin the evening with the meet and greet : at about 4:30 pm, Cory, a staff member gave us the tickets and made the listing of the donors who were present. At about 17h/17h15, we were able to enter by the artists doors, to attend the soundcheck, which was more a mini-concert for the fans. 

Imagine yourselves, Nine Inch Nails, approximately 20/25 fans and the empty Zénith, it was incredible. From our entrance, they played The Frail followed by The Wretched. All this for a handle of persons, surrealist... Trent greeted us, then said that it was a special evening: one German fan (who wasn't the youngest... smiling smiley ) had asked him in Berlin if she could sing Suck with the band.
He invited her to join the stage. Then he asked: "who wants to play tambo?". My friend and I where like "What ?? what the fuck ?!". During that time, a Dutch fan was the fastest to raise the hand, and was invited to join the stage too. 

They interpreted Suck, all together, with Rob Sheridan filming quite amusedly. 
They also played March of the Pigs, and another one I think. 
We then waited on the side, with Cory explaining us 2/3 things, while the band was getting ready for the meet and greet. 

We were led to a superior floor. My friend and I were the first ones to go to greet them. 
Robin introduced himself, as if he was unknown and had just begun in the music grinning smiley 
I gave him my The Downward Spiral vinyl for the autograph. 
Then Justin : he spoke French with my friend, saying that he had learned it at school. He asked my name and asked me if the way he had just signed was good for me. Really a nice guy. smiling smiley 
Then, Trent, who asked me something like : "Hey, how are you?". I tried to answer : "Fine, and you?". He answered me but he spoke in a low voice and I didn't really understood. Anyway I had the impression I was in a dreamyawning smiley I just more or less said to him : "Thank you so much". 
Ilan, then, whom I wished a good show after he signed my vinyl. 

Once all the 300$ donors greeted the band, we took two pics. I was next to Trent, holding him at the shoulder as two good friends. Robin leaned on my shoulders. grinning smiley my friend was just behind Trent and next to Robin. I look forward to seeing the photo. 
We were then able to go to the merch/food, waiting the doors to open. 

The concert in itself was excellent. I have already seen them two times this year (both festivals), but that is not worth a big arena. Moreover pleasantly surprised by the Zenith, rather cool room, good sound, bearable temperature. 
I was in the middle of the 3rd row. I had my rucksack with the vinyl in it. I put it on my trunk to protect it but it wasn't so easy. 
In the pit, it was mad, I needed to "fight" to remain standing. A girl left the pit after 30s, then another one just after who almost fainted. 

I was very happy to hear I' m Afraid of Americans (although it wasn't the 1st time), Last (this song rocks everything, I love these "metallic" guitars, really enormous), Heresy, La Mer, Physical, Head Like has Hole the classic to finish, etc.... 
The present for Ilan was simply too funny, with both strippers, and Closer In Da Club (it was the first time I heard it) grinning smiley 
He looked hampered... grinning smiley 

In brief, a day which I won't risk to forget so early. 

I just regret of not being fast enough to take a photo with Rob while he was hanging around during the soundcheck but that's life...
